Who Is Lucifer

Let us pray: Father of all light (enlightenment), Master of the universe, Ancient of days, Creator of all that is and ever will be, we ask You to make Yourself real to us right now in the nature of Your Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, the Truth-Giving Spirit, whose job is to bring us into all truth.

John 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. (NAS)

Holy Spirit, we ask You to cause the eyes of our understanding to be quickened, and the scales of tradition be removed from our eyes that we could better see and understand the nature and character of our Father and His creation.

Tradition has taught us many things, some of them good and some not so good. One of the amazing things that we have been taught has to do with who Lucifer is and or is not. I say amazing because we have been taught one thing but the scriptures very clearly state quite another. Tradition has taught us that Lucifer is Satan and that he was perfect in the beginning, being God’s highest arch-angel until pride swelled up in him and he was cast out of heaven and took a third of the angels with him.

Listed below is a section from a booklet called Suffering, War, Death, Why? published by

God did not make the world bad; He made it good. At the end of the six days of creation, God beheld His work and said it was "very good." Genesis 1:31. But, through tempting Adam and Eve, the first man and woman that God created, Satan brought sin into the world and perverted its original condition. (Genesis 3) So sin is the real cause of all pain - past, present, and yet to come - the cause of every tear and every heartache. All the evil in our world is the result of sin. With sin death came into this world, "for the wages of sin is death." Romans 6:23. Where did sin come from? The conflict between good and evil, this war between right and wrong, had its origin in heaven. Satan, who until this time was a perfect angel, rebelled against God and His government. (Ezekiel 28:13-17, Isaiah 14:12-15) He deceived many of the angels and persuaded them to join in his rebellion against the government of God. As a result, he and his angels were cast out of heaven. (Revelation 12:7-9) And now the earth is the battleground between good and evil. The greatest controversy, begun in heaven, was transferred to this earth and is now centered around man.

Let us do some research on this and see where tradition got this from.

 Is 14:12-15

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

I have bolded the word LUCIFER above to bring your attention to it. The King James version is the only one that uses the term LUCIFER here. Below are some examples of other translations.

Is 14:12

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations!

(ASV)

Is 14:12

12 "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, you who have weakened the nations!

(NAS)

Is 14:12

12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

(NIV)

Is 14:12

12 How you have fallen from heaven, O light-bringer and day star, son of the morning! How you have been cut down to the ground, you who weakened and laid low the nations [O blasphemous, satanic king of Babylon!]

(Amp)

Tradition has taught us that Luke 10:18 is an explanation of these verses. Here is that verse.

Luke 10:18

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. (KJV)

The following is the other reference that tradition says refers to Lucifer, the fallen angel.

Ezekiel 28:12-19

12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

(KJV)

There you have it! Feels real good and comfortable, just like we were taught, right? J

Well, I hate to upset the apple cart BUT I am afraid that the bible says quite another thing. Let’s look at the whole picture keeping things in context.

 Jesus said:

John 8:44

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

(KJV)

John said:

1 John 3:8

8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

(KJV)

Now, we already have a big problem! If both Jesus and John said that Satan was not perfect from the beginning, who are we going to believe, Tradition or the bible? So if these references are not referring to Satan, then who is the bible talking about? Let’s see if we can figure it out?

First of all, lets look at the word the King James translated LUCIFER. The following is the footnote for this verse in the Amplified Bible:

"The Hebrew for this expression "light-bringer" or "shinning one" is translated "Lucifer" in the Latin Vulgate, and is thus translated in the King James Version. But because of the association of that name with Satan, it is not now used in this and other translations. Some students feel that the application of the name Lucifer to Satan, in spite of the long and confident teaching to that effect, is erroneous. The application of the name to Satan has existed since the third century A.D., and is based on the supposition that Luke 10:18 is an explanation of Isa 14:12, which many authorities believe is not true. "Lucifer", the "Light Bringer", is the latin equivalent of the Greek word "Phosphoros", which is used as a title of Christ in 2 Peter 1:19 and corresponds to the name "radiant and brilliant Morning Star" in Rev 22:16, a name Jesus called Himself. This passage here in Isa 14:13 clearly applies to the king of Babylon."

By the way, Babylon means confusion.

Let’s take a look at the rest of the scriptures that go with these passages:

Is 14:12-23

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations!

13 And thou saidst in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north;

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to Sheol, to the uttermost parts of the pit.

16 They that see thee shall gaze at thee, they shall consider thee, (saying), Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

17 that made the world as a wilderness, and overthrew the cities thereof; that let not loose his prisoners to their home?

18 All the kings of the nations, all of them, sleep in glory, every one in his own house.

19 But thou art cast forth away from thy sepulchre like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain, that are thrust through with the sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a dead body trodden under foot.

20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people; the seed of evil-doers shall not be named for ever.

21 Prepare ye slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers, that they rise not up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.

22 And I will rise up against them, saith Jehovah of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and son and son's son, saith Jehovah.

23 I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith Jehovah of hosts.

 Ezekiel 28:12-19

12 Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

13 Thou wast in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, the topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was in thee; in the day that thou wast created they were prepared.

14 Thou wast the anointed cherub that covereth: and I set thee, (so that) thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till unrighteousness was found in thee.

16 By the abundance of thy traffic they filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore have I cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God; and I have destroyed thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

17 Thy heart was lifted up because of thy beauty; thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I have cast thee to the ground; I have laid thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

18 By the multitude of thine iniquities, in the unrighteousness of thy traffic, thou hast profaned thy sanctuaries; therefore have I brought forth a fire from the midst of thee; it hath devoured thee, and I have turned thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

19 All they that know thee among the peoples shall be astonished at thee: thou art become a terror, and thou shalt nevermore have any being. (ASV)

Lets take a look at some of the key things that these passages say:

We have established that he (Lucifer) was in the garden of Eden. Who all was there? God, Adam, Eve, and the serpent. Well, we know it is not God, right? It can’t be Eve because Lucifer is a man. It can’t be the serpent because Lucifer was a man and secondly we have already seen that it could not be Satan because he was not perfect in the beginning.

That only leaves Adam. Let’s see if that will work.

1) Did he say that he would be like God?

Gen 3:5

5 for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.

(ASV)

2) Did he profane his sancturies?

1 Cor 3:16,17

16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

2 Cor 6:16

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

(KJV)

3) Did he have great wisdom and was perfectly equiped to do the job?.

Gen 2:19-20

19 And out of the ground Jehovah God formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens; and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them: and whatsoever the man called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help meet for him.

(ASV)

4) Was Adam a man?

Gen 2:7

7 And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

(ASV)

5) Did God put him in the garden?

Gen 2:8

8 And Jehovah God planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

(ASV)

6) Did pride cause him to profane his sanctuaries? Did he know exactly what he was doing?

1 Tim 2:14

14 and Adam was not beguiled, but the woman being beguiled hath fallen into transgression:

(ASV)

7) Did God say that he would be brought down to the grave. (sheol or hades)?

Gen 2:16,17

16 And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Gen 5:5

5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. (ASV)

Has Satan died, has he been sent to the grave?

8) Was Adam cast from the mountain of God?

Gen 3:22-24

22 And Jehovah God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23 therefore Jehovah God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden the Cherubim, and the flame of a sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

(ASV)

Well, that surely sheds a different light on things. But, that brings us to another question.

Where did Satan come from then?

Let’s take a look.

1 Kings 22:19-23

19 And (Micaiah) said, Therefore hear thou the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left.

20 And Jehovah said, Who shall entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner; and another said on that manner.

21 And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him.

22 And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so.

23 Now therefore, behold, Jehovah hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and Jehovah hath spoken evil concerning thee.

(ASV)

Isa 54:16

16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the fire of coals, and bringeth forth a weapon for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. (ASV)

Isa 45:7

7 I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil. I am Jehovah, that doeth all these things.

(ASV)

Eph 3:9-11

9 and to make all men see what is the dispensation of the mystery which for ages hath been hid in God who created all things;

10 to the intent that now unto the principalities and the powers in the heavenly (places) might be made known through the church the manifold wisdom of God,

11 according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

Rev 4:11

11 Worthy art thou, our Lord and our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power: for thou didst create all things, and because of thy will they were, and were created.

(ASV)

John 8:44

44 Ye are of (your) father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof. (ASV)

1 John 3:8

8 he that doeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

(ASV)

Well, even if that is true, didn’t Jesus say that he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven?

Yes, he did! How many times have we said and seen strongholds come tumbling down? After all, he was responding to the 70 who went out and did all kinds of wonderful things in His Name.

Luke 10:17-20

17 And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject unto us in thy name.

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan fallen as lightning from heaven.

19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall in any wise hurt you.

20 Nevertheless in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

(ASV)

Revelation is quite clear about where the devil is, even at this point. The Man-Child of Rev 12 has to come forth first before Satan is thrown out of heaven and that has not occurred yet !

Rev 12:9

9 And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him. (ASV)

Are you trying to say that the devil is in heaven now?

Yes, he has access to both heaven and earth!. Look at this from Job.

Job 1:6-12

6 Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

7 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

8 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

9 Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

10 Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

11 But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

12 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

(ASV)

 The bottom line is this:

  • Satan was not perfect in the beginning like we have been taught.
  • God had to have created the Devil in his present condition.
  • Which means that our God is really big!
  • He did not come up with Plan "B" when Adam fell.
  • God knows and understands ALL THINGS.

Romans 11:36

For from Him and to Him and through Him are all things. For all things originate with Him and come from Him; all things live through Him, and all things center in and tend to consummate and to end in Him. To Him be the glory forever! Amen - so be it. (Amp)

God knew that Adam would deliberately and knowingly choose to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil long before he did it.

1 Tim 2:14

And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived and deluded and fell into transgression. (Amp)

Rev 13:8 clearly says that the plan for the redemption of mankind was conceived before the foundation of the world.

Rev 13:8

8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (KJV)

One last note: In studying the original word translated LUCIFER in the King James, I discovered some interesting information. There was a god in the Ugartic-Helenistic arena named Phaethon that wanted to be greater than all of the other gods, so he climbed their special holy mountain to achieve this. However, the head god got wind of this and threw him off of the mountain into sheol or hades. (the grave).

Does this sound familiar?

According to the footnote above from the Amplified Bible, we understand that the teaching that Lucifer as Satan did not start until around the third century, a.d. Isn’t that interesting? That is about the time that Constantine became a Christian and forced his entire nation to become "CHRISTIAN" overnight. The people who were pagan philosphers one day were the church theologians the next, and from that, the birth of the Catholic Church. My.... my.... my! In reality, we have been sold a bill of goods that distorts our understanding of who God is without even knowing it. What does the word say about ignorance?

Hos 4:6

6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children.

(ASV)

I realize that this does more than just de-throne Satan, it messes with your concepts of who God is.

Oh well, you say, this has nothing to do with my salvation!

That is true, however, if we are to put on His nature and character, our understanding of who He is must be in line with the Truth and the Word. How can we effectively be used of God if we do not have a proper understanding of who He is and who Satan is? Without the proper perspective, how can we ever love our enemies (the original Greek says the Devil)?

We are NOT pawns caught between two great cosmic forces at war with each other. The devil is doing just what he was created to do. His job is to kill and destroy. If we will yield to the Most High God, the God of love, mercy, and forgiveness, then the only thing that Satan can do to us is to kill and destroy that part of us that is not yet yielded to God. We run into God as fast as we can, not seeing Him as a crutch but a hospital! Praise His Holy Name!

Thank You, most Holy One, Giver of Life, Creator of All Things, for opening our minds and hearts to understand more of who You are. Thank You for Your promises to us, i.e.

1 John 3:2

2 Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is.

(ASV)
