Chapter 1
This is the beginning of the word. It’s about Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was sent to you. It’s written in the Book of Isaiah, "Look and you shall see, I am sending one ahead of you, who will begin what is to be. His voice will cry out to all who can hear, ‘It’s time to straighten out your lives; it’s now time to draw near. The Lord is coming, and you shall see that the life you have been living will cause a distasteful destiny.’"
John baptized in the wilderness, he preached repentance so everyone could hear. He said that sins would be forgiven, that hearts and minds would be made clear.
Everyone in the Judean countryside, including the people in Jerusalem, went out to John confessing all their sin. They were baptized in the Jordan River, they listened and did repent; in their desire to be forgiven, they received the one God had sent.
John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. The diet that he kept was not one we would like to taste. Locusts and wild honey, was what John did eat, and these are the words that he would preach: "There is someone coming, with a whole new wave. He is so far beyond where I am, I’m not even worthy to be His slave. I am baptizing you, yes, and I am using water. He is coming to baptize you with Holy Spirit power."
One day Jesus showed up, He came to be baptized by John. When He came out of the water, the sky split open. God’s Spirit then came on Jesus; it came down like a dove. A voice from heaven spoke, "I am well pleased with you, my Son."
Right then the Spirit of God led Jesus into the desert place. Here in this wilderness, He met Satan face to face. The devil continually tempted Him, but Jesus stood in the truth. Whenever Jesus spoke, the devil was caught in his own noose.
The wild animals would come to Jesus; they were His only friends. The angels of God also came and ministered to Him.
After John was put into prison, Jesus came into Galilee. John had been arrested by King Herod, and now Jesus began to speak; "The time has now come, God’s Kingdom is near. Turn from your sins and act on this news that you hear."
Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee when He saw Simon and Andrew, his brother. They were casting a net into the sea. Jesus spoke to them, "Come and follow after me; I will make you into fishers of men, as my ways you learn and heed." Simon and Andrew wasted no time when they heard His voice. They followed Him right away; they made Him their first choice.
When Jesus went a litter further, He saw James, the son of Zebedee; with him was his brother John, and they were mending their nets by the sea. Without even a pause, Jesus called out to them, and like the others, they wasted no time. They quickly followed Jesus leaving their father and the hired hands behind.
They all went into Capernaum, it was on the Sabbath day; Jesus went right into the church and preached what God had to say. All that were there were very surprised at the words that He did speak. He spoke as one who knew; He spoke with authority.
There was a man among them, who was demon possessed; "I know who you are, leave us alone or we will have no rest. You have come to destroy us; you are Jesus the Nazarene. You’re the Holy Son of God!" These words this man did scream. Jesus replied, "Be silent! Now come out of him!" The demon came out convulsing and screaming, and the man was made whole again.
"What is this?" The people wondered. "A new teaching He brings our way. He speaks with authority, and the demons obey!?"
Immediately Jesus became famous. Everyone was talking about Him. They even started following Him around to see if He could do it again.
As Jesus and His men left the church, they went to Simon and Andrew’s house. James and John were with them when they found Simon’s mother-in-law sick and lying on the couch. They went and told it to Jesus, and He came and took her by the hand. He lifted her up, the fever left, and she began to cook for them.
After the sun went down, many people were brought to Him. They brought the sick and the demon possessed so that Jesus would heal them. People came from everywhere, they all gathered at the door. Jesus healed every one of them and wouldn’t let the demons speak anymore.
Early in the morning, before the light of day, Jesus went to a quiet place where He could be alone and pray. Simon Peter and the others came to Jesus and said, "Everyone is looking for you; they want all that they can get. Jesus answered, "We must go, there are other countries and towns; I have to preach there also. That is why I’ve come around."
Jesus went through all of Galilee. He went into the churches, and He would teach. He drove out demons and set many people free.
One day a leper came to Jesus, he was begging on his knees. "Jesus, if you are willing, I know that you can make me clean." Jesus was moved with compassion, and reached His hand out to him. Jesus said, "I am willing; you are now clean again." Instantly the man was healed, his skin was no longer diseased. Jesus said to him, "Don’t speak of this to anyone, but go the Priests and make an offering. Present yourself to them, that your healing will be proved true. Go do it now as in the Law of Moses it was told to you."
Well, this man went out and he spoke it to everyone; this made it so Jesus could no longer, in any town, come. He was flocked by so many; He had to go into a desert place. The people came from everywhere just to see Him and watch His ways.
Chapter 2
Jesus returned to Capernaum after several days. It was then reported of His whereabouts, and many people came. So many people gathered there, you couldn’t get in the door. Four men went up on the roof and lowered a paralyzed man to the floor. Jesus was teaching, when He saw this taking place. He spoke to the man, "Son, your sin has been erased."
Among those sitting there were some of the Scribes, when they heard this, they became angry at what they heard and what they saw with their eyes, "Who does He think He is? He is speaking blasphemies; only God can forgive sins. When Jesus picked up on what was going on, this is what He said to them, "Why are you thinking these things in your heart? Is it easier to say, ‘your sins are forgiven, or take up your bed and depart? Just so you can know that the Son of man has that power, Jesus spoke to the man again, "Get up; pick up your bed and go home this very hour." The man got right up and picked up his bed, right in front of all. The people were so amazed they began to glorify God. Others just stood there in awe.
Jesus then went back out along the sea, and the crowds followed Him. As Jesus walked, He also talked. He taught every one of them.
As Jesus was walking, He spotted Levi, who was sitting at a collection booth. Jesus said to him, "Come and follow me, for I have much to teach you." Levi jumped up right away; he didn’t hesitate. He was so excited that he left no time to waste.
That night, Levi invited his coworkers to dinner. Many other sinners came there too. They all gathered around Jesus so they could hear and learn the truth. When the teachers of the law saw Jesus eating with men of ill repute, they said, "How can he eat with such scum?" They had a real bad attitude. When Jesus heard their words, He turned to them and said, "Those who are well don’t need a doctor, just those who are sick, living among the dead. I didn’t come to call the righteous, but those who are in sin. I’ve come to let them know that the door is open and they can come in."
John’s disciples and the Pharisees made it a habit to fast. Some people came to Jesus and this is what they asked: "John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees make fasting a habit in their lives. How is it that your disciples are not fasting; how can this be right?" Jesus spoke, "Can those, who are at a wedding feast, deny the bridegroom and not eat? If they did not celebrate with Him, what kind of gathering would that be? One day He will be gone, then you will see them fast and mourn. You cannot take a foreigner and expect his accent to be clear. In time he will change into that which he continually sees and hears; new wine will break an old bottle; the fermentation is too strong. New goes into new and both will birth the perfect song."
It was on the Sabbath day, when Jesus walked through a cornfield, and His disciples plucked some corn on the way. The Pharisees were watching and they spoke with contempt; "They cannot harvest on this day, or the Sabbath will not be kept!" Jesus looked at them and spoke, "Didn’t you ever read? Don’t you remember what David and his friends did when they were hungry? It was when Abiathar was the High Priest. They all entered into the temple of God and took the consecrated bread to eat. The Sabbath was made for man; It was so he can be restored and gain strength again. The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath day. He came forth to bless, not to fall into man-made ways."
Chapter 3
Jesus then went into the Synagogue and inside there was a man. The Pharisees watched closely, to see if Jesus would heal his withered hand. They were looking for a reason, so they could accuse Jesus. If He healed on the Sabbath, then they would be satisfied and they would throw a fit.
Jesus spoke to the one, who had the withered hand, "Come, in front of everyone; this is where I would like for you to stand. Then Jesus asked, "Which do you think is right to do on the Sabbath day? To heal or to destroy, to kill or to save?
No one said a word, they just watched in disbelief. Jesus was so grieved at their stubbornness, He said, "Stretch out your hand towards me." As the man stretched out his hand, it was made whole again. The Pharisees went out to the Herodians and the plot against Jesus began.
Jesus just went away to a quiet place; He and His disciples went to the lake. There was a large crowd from Judea and also from Galilee. They followed close behind so they could also see. They came from Jerusalem, from Tyre and Sidon. A great multitude came, even from beyond Jordan. When they had heard of Jesus, they came from everywhere. They desired so much to find Him, just to be with one who truly cared. He healed so many people that they were continually crowding Him. The disciples went and got a boat and Jesus got in.
When unclean spirits saw Jesus, they cried out at His feet, "You are the Son of God." But Jesus commanded them not to speak.
Jesus went up to a mountain and called those who He chose. There were twelve of them who followed Jesus up that road. He chose these to be with Him. He would send them out to preach. They would have power over every devil, and they would heal every sickness and disease.
There was Simon, who He called Peter. Then James, the son of Zebedee. There was also John, the brother of James; he called them Boanerges. There was Andrew and Philip, and then Bartholomew. Thomas and James, sons of Alphaeus; and oh yeah, there was also Matthew. There was Thaddeus and Simon, who was a Canaanite. Then there was Judas Iscariot who, from Jesus, would take flight.
They went into a house and crowds gathered of every kind. Jesus friends went to get Him saying, "He is out of His mind." There were so many people, there wasn’t even room to eat. The Scribes also came from Jerusalem, with many negative words to speak. They said, "He is possessed by Bezelbub, and that is why the demons leave; Bezelbub is prince over them, that’s why they can’t stay or speak."
Jesus called them to Him and with parables; He took His stand, "If Satan casts out Satan, how can his kingdom stand? If a kingdom is divided, that kingdom will wither away. If a house is against itself, how can that house stay? If Satan rises up against himself, then he cannot stand, he will be divided and his kingdom would end. No one can enter a strongman’s house and take out his things, he must first tie him up; and then the strongman won’t have any strength."
"Listen to the words I speak, they come forth as truth; your sins against me and each other will be forgiven of you. But, whoever chooses to sin against the Holy Ghost, this one is guilty of eternal sin and has become as toast." Jesus spoke these words because of what they said about Him. They said that Jesus had an evil spirit living within. He said that this belief would bring eternal death to them.
Jesus brother and mother showed up. They were outside calling to Him. The multitude was so great that they could not get in. As the people sat around Jesus, they said; "Your mother and brothers are here. They are outside waiting for you. They want to speak to you there." Jesus answered, "Who is my mother? And my brothers, who are they? They are all of those who hear the words of my Father, they are those who choose to obey."
Chapter 4
Jesus began to teach again at the side of the sea. So many came to Him that in a boat, He took a seat. They gathered along the seashore, at the water’s edge. The people looked at Him intently and listened to very word He said.
He taught them in story form. He had many words to speak. The first thing that He talked about was a farmer planting seed: "A farmer went out to plant seed one day. As he was going some fell along the way. The birds then came and they ate all that hey had found. There was not one seed left there on that ground."
"Some fell on stony soil and it came up real fast, but because the ground was shallow, it was scorched and did not last. Some fell among the thorns and when the thorns grew, they choked the seed so there wasn’t any fruit. Some fell on good ground and there was great increase. It multiplied thirty, sixty, even one hundred times. The farmer was very pleased. Those who have ears to hear let them hear and understand." Later, when Jesus was alone with His disciples, they asked, "What was that all about man?"
Jesus said, "The secret of God’s Kingdom has been given to you, but for everyone else it is difficult to chew. They are always seeing, but they never do grasp. They are always hearing, but the understanding does not last. I would that they would choose to understand and be forgiven; that they would perceive all that I have given."
He then continued, "If you don’t understand this story, how will you understand the rest? The farmer plants the word, and some people are like the seed along the path. The word is spoken to them, but Satan comes right away, he takes away every word that was sown into them that day."
"Some are just like the seed that is planted in stony ground, they hear and are happy, but they don’t stick around. They don’t have any roots, so it doesn’t last; there was no foundation for it to grab. When troubles come, they no longer believe; they go back to their old ways, and the blessings they never receive."
"Still others are like those in the thorns; they hear the preaching of the word, but riches and lusts of worldly things cause them to forget the freedom they heard. So they too are without fruit and back to the earth they go. They go after the things of the world and are left with nothing to show. Then we have the ones who are like the good ground. They hear, they receive, and they bring forth fruit; thirty, sixty, and even a hundred pounds."
"Do you bring a candle and put it under a bed to be hid? Do you not place it on a stand so all can see from the light it gives. Whatever is hidden will definitely be shown, and everything that is concealed will be brought forth and be made known. If anyone can, let him hear, let him choose to open his ears. But be very careful and consider what you hear. You will find that both life and death will come to your ears."
"Whatever measure you choose to use will be the same that comes back to you. Make it a point to consider taking hold of what is true. Whoever has understanding will increase, but whoever doesn’t will loose everything, including their peace. The Kingdom of heaven is like a man who scatters seed. It grows day and night whether he is awake or asleep. The soil produces the grain, first the blade and then the ear. Then comes the fullness and the sickle comes to shear."
"What shall I compare to the Kingdom God? It’s like a grain of mustard seed that becomes the biggest tree in the yard. It grows and becomes the largest of all the garden plants. The birds they come to it and find a comfortable place to land."
Jesus always spoke with parables to those who gathered around Him. But when He was alone with His disciples, He explained each one to them. Later in the evening, Jesus said, "Let’s go over to the other side." So off they went and left the crowd to go forward on that ride. There were other little ships in that place with Him, and as they started out, there arose an awful wind. The waves, they were humongous; the water filled the ship. Jesus was asleep on a pillow, while His disciples were having a fit.
They ran and cried out, "Master! Don’t you care if we drown?" Jesus got up and spoke to the wind and waves, "Be quiet and settle down." The wind stopped instantly, and there was great peace. Jesus asked, "Why were you afraid, do you not yet see?" The disciples were terrified at what they had just taken in. "Who is this man?" They questioned, "even the winds and the sea obey Him."
Chapter 5
When they crossed over the lake, to the other side, a man came out of the tombs, and to Jesus, he did cry. They had landed in the country of the Gadarenes. This man had been tormented by a spirit that made him cause quite a scene. There was nothing that could hold him down; not even chains. Many times he had been bound, but he would break the iron and the reins. No one could tame this man; night and day he would cry all alone. He wandered in the mountains and tombs cutting himself with stones. As soon as this man saw Jesus, he ran and fell on his knees. He cried out with a loud voice, "what have I to do with thee?" "Jesus, you are the Son of the most High God; in the name of God I ask that you torment me not."
Jesus had spoken to the demon, "You come out of him." Then Jesus asked his name as He spoke to him again. "Legion" came the answer, "for many of us, here, reside". Then the demons begged Jesus not to send them away from this countryside. There was a herd of pigs eating along the mountainside. The demons begged Jesus to send them into the pigs to abide. Jesus gave them permission, and then from the man they went into the swine. The herd then ran into the sea because they had then lost their minds. The pigs all drowned. Then the men, who had been tending them ran into the city to tell all that they saw happen.
When the town's people came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed. He was sitting there by Jesus; he was in his right mind and fully dressed. Those who had watched the event had explained all that they had seen; how the man had been released, and the pigs ran into the sea. As the people watched and listened, they became afraid. They spoke to Jesus, "We beg you to leave this place."
As Jesus went to the ship, the man who had been possessed came up to Him. He begged Jesus to take him with them. Jesus told him, "No, you must go home. Show everyone what God has done and make His com- passion known." So the man went to Decapolis and told it everywhere. The people were all amazed at what Jesus had done for him there.
When Jesus had crossed back over to the other side of the sea, many people met Him there; they came with all of their needs. Jarius, a synagogue ruler, came and fell at Jesus’ feet. He begged Jesus to heal his daughter, "She is dying; won’t you come, please?! Please come and lay your hands on her so she will be healed and live. I know that you are the Christ and life is what you give."
Jesus went with Jarius, and all the people followed too. They pressed in so close to Him that no one could get through. There was a woman in the crowd, who had been bleeding for twelve years. The doctors only made things worse and she suffered many fears. She had spent all of her money, on trying to get well. Now she was worse; the doctors had all failed. When she heard of Jesus, she worked her way to Him. She was thinking, "If I can only touch the hem of His garment, I will be well again."
She did reach Jesus, and she touched His garment hem. Instantly she was healed as the virtue flowed out from Him. Jesus noticed right away that virtue, from Him, had flowed; He turned around and asked, "Who was it that touched my clothes?" The disciples answered, "Oh Jesus, C’mon; you see the multitude. How can we possibly know who touched you?" But Jesus kept asking and looking for the one. Then the woman stepped out in fear over what she had done. Trembling, she knelt before Him, and her story she did tell. Jesus said, "Daughter, it is because of your faith that you have been made well."
As Jesus was still speaking, several men came from Jairus’ home. "Don’t bother anymore, your daughter is dead; leave the teacher alone." Jesus ignored their words and said, "Jairus, do not be afraid, only believe." Then Jesus went to Jairus’ house and with Him were James, John, and Pete.
When they got there, much commotion was going on. There was weeping and wailing and all sorts of carrying on. Jesus said, "What are you doing? The child is sleeping, she is still alive." The people all laughed at Jesus like He was crazy, but He just put them all outside.
Jesus then took Jairus, his wife and the disciples into the room where the girl was. He said, "Little girl, wake up." As soon as He finished speaking, she opened her eyes and jumped up. Those in the room were overcome with amazement as she stood to her feet. Jesus then commanded, "Tell this to no one. Now give her something to eat."
Chapter 6
Jesus then left that place, and they all went back to His hometown. On the Sabbath, He taught in the synagogue, to all who were gathered around. Many who heard Him were amazed at His words, "Where did He get this wisdom? From whom did He learn? There are so many mighty works that have come from His hands. We know His family, and He is just a carpenter; how does He take this stand?" Jesus replied, "A prophet gets honor, except when in His own home place." Jesus could only heal a few people there; He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus then went around the village teaching continually. He called His twelve disciples and sent them out with authority. He sent them out by twos, with power over all that was unclean. Then He gave them instructions for their journey; "Take nothing except a staff. Don’t take any bread or a knapsack. Don’t take any money and just wear the shoes you have on. Your clothes will be fine; don’t put two shirts on. When you come into a home, that is where you shall stay, don’t be wandering all over the place. In each town you come into, there will be a home waiting for you. To those who don’t receive you, shake the dust off your shoes. That will be a sign that you have left them to themselves. God has sent you, but they desired something else."
So off went the disciples and preached to people everywhere. They told them to repent and healed the sick that were there. They cast out demons and people were set free. They glorified God with this testimony.
It wasn’t long before King Herod heard about what was going on. He heard about Jesus, who some thought was the Baptizer, John. Herod thought that John had risen up from the grave; others said it was Elijah, or a prophet like those of the old days. But Herod was sure that this was John the Baptist. It was Herod who had John beheaded and put to death. Herod had taken John and had him bound and put in prison. It was because of His wife, Herodias, who was not fond of him.
You see, Herod had married his brother Phillip’s wife; that’s who Herodias was. John had told them that it wasn’t right, so Herodias held a grudge. She wanted him killed, but she had no authority. Herod had feared John as a holy man, and many of his words were gladly received. But when a day was convenient for Herodias to have her wish, she wasted no time in coming up with this: It was Herod’s birthday, and He gave a big party. He invited his high officials, military commanders, and leading men of Galilee. Herodias’ daughter came in and danced for the King. The King and his dinner guests were so very pleased. The King was beside himself and offered her a gift, "Anything you desire is what I will give." He promised with an oath to give anything she asked. Even if it were up to half of his kingdom, it would be a finished task. The girl ran quickly to get the answer from her mother. "The head of John the Baptist," is what her mother said to her. The girl hurried back to the king to tell him her desire, "The head of John the Baptist is what I do require. Bring it to me now, here on a tray; do it quickly sir, and let there be no delay." The King became distressed, what had he done? But because of the guests that were present, he commanded the head of the Holy one. He sent an executioner, who went and beheaded John. He gave it to the girl on the platter that she requested it be put on. When John’s disciples heard of this news, they came and got his body and placed it in a tomb.
When Jesus disciples returned from the town, they told Him how the cast out devils and healed all those who came around. There were so many people, they had no time to rest or eat. Jesus said, "Come let us go to a quiet place, let us now retreat."
As they left, some people watched and followed right along. They got there before Jesus did; their desire for Him was strong. When Jesus landed, He saw the large crowd gathered there. With much compassion He began to teach them; they were as sheep with no shepherd to care.
It was getting late and no one had yet been fed. The disciples went to Jesus and this is what they said, "Tell the people to go now, this is a desert place; there is no food here for them, and they must eat to gain their strength."
Jesus said, "You feed them." They replied, "Now how are we supposed to do that? Do you suggest we go spend a fortune on food and then feed them when we get back?" "How much bread is here?" Jesus asked. "Go look and see." When the disciples finished they said, "Five loaves and two fish are all that we have here to eat." Jesus said, "Sit the people into groups." As this was done, Jesus prayed and then had the disciples pass out the food. They sat in groups of fifties and groups of hundreds too; there was not one person that had gone without food. The disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers, after feeding five thousand. As soon as they were finished, Jesus sent them in a boat ahead of Him, into another land. He sent them to Bethsaida, while He sent the crowd away. Then Jesus, Himself, went off alone to a quiet place to pray.
Late in the night, the disciples were out in the middle of the lake while Jesus was still on land. He saw that the disciples having a rough time, it was because of the wind. Jesus went out to them and would have passed right by, but when the disciples saw Him, they began to cry. They thought it was a ghost walking on the sea, and they were terrified. Jesus called out, "Don’t be afraid, it’s me." Jesus got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped right away. First it was the bread and the fish; now this. The disciples were utterly amazed.
When they got to the land of Gennaseret, the people recognized Jesus right away. They came from everywhere bringing their sick so he would heal them on this day. Everywhere Jesus went, the sick were laid out in the streets; they asked to just touch the hem of His garment, and all who did were made complete.
Chapter 7
There were some Pharisees and certain Scribes who came from Jerusalem acting like spies. They saw some of Jesus’ disciples who didn’t wash before they ate. Since this was against their tradition, it was more than they could take. They never ate anything before their hands were cleaned. Whenever they come back from the market, if they don’t wash, then they don’t eat. There are also many other traditions about washing vessels, tables, pots and pans. So this really offended them, about the unwashed hands.
They asked Jesus, "Why do your disciples eat with hands that are defiled? By doing this they do not keep our old religious style!" Jesus said, "Isaiah spoke well of your hypocritical ways; ‘you speak well of me with your lips, but your hearts are not as you say. Your worship is a joke; teaching mans rules to be God’s law. Your doctrines are proven to me as nothing but flaws.’ Isaiah was so right on how you set God’s ways aside. You set up your own tradition; your truth is full of lies. You lay aside the words of God and choose your own plans, then you get furious over things as trivial as the washing of pots and pans."
"Honor your father and mother, is what Moses said; those who speak evil of them are as good as dead. But you justify what you take from them by saying for God it is a benefit. You take their children away from obligation and say, ‘To God this is a gift'. You take the ways of God and cast them aside; in your own made up traditions you gloat with pride. There are many other ways of God that you count as no effect. You teach to yourselves and others nothing but death."
Jesus called the people to Him, "Hear and understand; there is nothing that comes from the outside that can defile a man. It’s the things you chose to do, the things that you say. It’s your own ways that judge and bring defilement your way.
Jesus then went inside to be away from the crowd. His disciples came and said, "Lord, what are you talking about?" Jesus answered; "Is it true that you also don’t understand? You really don’t grasp the meaning of what defiles a man? Whatever you eat cannot harm your soul. It’s into the stomach and then out it goes. It’s what comes out of your heart; your thinking and your ways. It’s the decisions that you make by the things you choose to say. From inside the heart come evil thoughts and sexual immorality; slander, pride and foolishness; fornication and adultery. These are the things in the heart that bring defilement to a man. It has nothing to do with whether or not you eat with clean hands."
Jesus then left Galilee and went to the outskirts of Tyre and Sidon. He quietly went into a house hoping there would be no one to look upon. But Jesus could not be hidden; He was sought out everywhere. A woman, whose daughter was controlled by a demon, came to Him right there. She came to Jesus and fell down at His feet. The only problem was, she was a despised Greek. "Please Lord, I need you to set my daughter free." Jesus replied; "Before I feed the dogs, I must feed my own family." She answered Him, "Yes sir, that is very true and I understand it all, but even the dogs get to eat the scraps that from the table fall." Jesus said, "Because of your words spoken so true, your daughter has now been given back to you." When the woman returned home she found that her daughter was free; she was lying on the bed, in rest, no longer in dis-ease.
Upon returning from Tyre, towards the Sea of Galilee, Jesus headed right through the Decapolis territory. The people brought a man to Him; his speech was very weak, and he could not hear. Jesus took him aside and put His finger into the man’s ears. Jesus then took His spit and touched the man’s tongue; He then commanded it to be undone. He spoke the word, "Ephphatha" (be open), and His word was done. The man could now speak clearly and he could also hear. Jesus said not to tell anyone, but the people were so excited they told everyone who came near. The people held Jesus in such high esteem, "He does all things well; He makes the deaf to hear and the dumb can now speak."
Chapter 8
There was a great crowd that had gathered, and there was nothing for them to eat. Jesus called his disciples near and then began to speak. "There are so many people here, and it has been so long since they ate. I am concerned that since it’s been three days, they will collapse when they go on their way. Some have come from so far, and their hike back will be long; I ‘m afraid that on their way, their strength will be gone." His disciples said, "Oh, and what are we supposed to do? Where in this desert place are we going find any food?"
Jesus asked, "How many loaves are here?" "Seven" is what they said. Jesus then told the people to sit down. He prayed and then had the disciples pass out the bread. They also had a few small fish that Jesus had them pass around. They all ate until they were full, and they rested on the ground.
When everyone was finished, there were seven baskets of scraps. There had been about four thousand who had eaten; now how did Jesus do that?
Jesus then sent the people away, and He and His disciples got into a boat. They went over to the region of Dalmautha, where the Pharisees came and spoke. They started to badger Jesus and demanded a sign. They said, "Show us a miracle, Jesus, do something in the sky." Jesus sighed, "Why is if that you continually desire proof? Believe me, enough has been shown to you."
Jesus got back in the boat and left them to their own way. He and His Disciples went over to the other side of the Lake. The disciples had forgotten to bring food, and they had only one loaf of bread to eat. Jesus cautioned them to beware of the yeast of Herod and the Pharisees. The disciples were confused and wondered in question, "Is it because we forgot bread that He now makes this presentation?" When Jesus realized what they were discussing about bread, He asked, "Do you not understand the words that I have said? You have eyes, yet you do not see? I also find that your ears do not hear me. Don’t you remember how five loaves fed five thousand? Do you remember how many baskets full you had left in your hands? " "We had twelve baskets left", is what they said to Him. Then He continued with the following question: "Now what about the four thousand that were fed with loaves of seven? How many baskets were left? He asked of them. They answered, "There were seven that were left then; Jesus looked at them and said, "And you don’t understand?"
As they entered into the town of Bethsaida, a blind man was brought to Him. The people asked Jesus if He would please touch him. Jesus took the blind man’s hand and led him outside of the city. Jesus spit in His eyes and put His hands on him, then asked if he could see. "Yes," he said, but the men all look like trees. Jesus covered his eyes again, and then he could clearly see. Jesus sent the man home saying, "Do not go back into the town. Go back to our own home and don’t spread this around."
Jesus and His disciples then headed to another village; as they walked to Caserea Phillipi He asked, "What do the people say about me? Who is it," He asked, "that they say I am?" The disciples opened their mouth and answered Him. "Well, some say you’re John the Baptist; some say a prophet like those of old. Then there are those who say Elijah and others just don’t know."
"What about you?" Jesus asked of them. "Who is it that you, yourselves think that I am?" Simon Peter spoke up, he answered right away; "You are Christ the Anointed One." Is what Simon Peter had to say. Jesus intently looked at each of them and said, "Do not share this word. That which has just been revealed to you let it not be heard."
Jesus then began sharing the things that were to come, how He would suffer many things, because of who He was. "I will be tested and rejected by the elders and the teachers of the law. I will be ridiculed by those who think they know it all. It will be that death will come, because of who I am. Then in three days, I’m going to rise again." Jesus spoke these things very plainly, so they could understand. He made sure He spoke very clear of what was to become of the Son of Man.
Peter then spoke to Jesus, "These things cannot be true! Why is it that you speak this way? This is not what is to become of you!" Jesus said, "Back off Satan! Who do you think you are? You long for the natural things and from God you’ve gone off far."
Jesus then called the people together, along with His disciples too. He said, "There are many things that I need to say to you. If you really desire to be as I am, then deny your own way. Forget about your own interests and do only as I say. The one who would desire his own way, his own desire takes his life away. Those who give up themselves will find life to be theirs. You will come into a new reality, and God’s Kingdom will be your share. What good is it to chase after worldly ways, just to satisfy an empty desire at a cost that is so great? What can be worth more than having life? Is anything worth the trade? Can anything satisfy? "
"Whoever is embarrassed about who it is that I am, whoever denies my words, has denied me as his friend. Whoever desires the sin and the adultery of this life, he will also be denied by the one called Christ. When the Son comes in glory with His angels in company, the denial of you will be your destiny.
Chapter 9
Jesus continued, "I’m telling you there are some men standing here this very hour, they will not know death until they see God’s Kingdom in full power."
Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James and John. He took them to a mountain, where another light came on. His appearance changed before them; His clothes were white like snow. The light that glowed from Jesus was something they had never known. Moses and Elijah then came and with Jesus, they conversed. Peter then started babbling, saying these words, "Lord, it is great for us to be here, this is where we shall stay; we’ll make a shelter for each of you." Peter was in fear and didn’t know what else to say. A cloud then covered over them and a voice was heard, "This is my dearly loved Son, listen to His every word." Suddenly to their surprise, the vision disappeared. They were alone again, with Jesus standing near.
Coming down the mountain, Jesus spoke to them, "Don’t tell of this to anyone, until the Son has risen again." So they kept it to themselves and didn’t tell anyone, and in their hearts they wondered about this death that was to come.
"Lord, we have heard it said that first Elijah must come?" Jesus said, "Yes it is true, he will prepare the way for the Son. And how about the Son of Man, what has been written of Him? Is it not hat He would be rejected, despised and will suffer at the hands of men? It’s true about Elijah, and he already came. It happened to him just as it was written; he was treated with disdain."
When Jesus returned to His disciples once again, He saw a great crowd gathered, and the Scribes were questioning them. When everyone saw Jesus, they all ran to Him. They were amazed at this man and wondered about His position.
Jesus asked, "What are all these questions that are being asked here? Why all the fussing? What is the reason for the un-rest that takes so much discussing?" One of the people shouted; "Lord, I brought my son. He needs a healing because a spirit has caused him to be dumb. It takes control of him, and he foams at the mouth. He gets thrown around and wasted. Lord, he is all worn out! I came to your disciples with the hope that they would set him free, but as you can notice, this did not come to be.
Jesus answered, "What is with this generation? Why do you fail to believe? How long shall this continue? Bring the boy here to me."
They brought the boy to Jesus, but when Jesus was who he saw, the child went into convulsions, and on the ground he did fall.
Jesus asked the father, "How long is it that he has been this way? The father looked at Jesus and answered right away. "This came when he was a child, he was very small. He gets thrown into fire and water. Can you help us at all?
"Can I?" Said Jesus. "Look and you shall see, all things are possible, if you just believe." Oh Lord, then I believe, please help me with my doubt. Help me to understand that you can truly cast this out."
Jesus saw a crowd coming, so He said to the spirit, "Come out! Leave and don’t return again, this is no longer your house." The demon came out shrieking, as the boy’s body jerked around. Everyone thought the boy was dead when he ended up lying motionless on the ground. Jesus then took his hand and helped him to his feet. When the disciples were alone with Jesus, they asked, "Why couldn’t we make it leave?" Jesus answered, "The only way that this will leave, is through prayer of the deepest extreme."
Jesus and the disciples then left, they went through Galilee. Jesus desired that no one see them, as He taught His disciples what was to be. They all intently listened, as Jesus spoke to them. He told them how He was to be delivered into the hands of men. He told them that He would be killed, then He would rise again in three days, He was actually going to come up from the grave. The disciples just could not understand, "What was it that Jesus was saying to them?"
In a short while they arrived at Capernaum; Jesus asked them, "What were you speaking of as we were walking along the road?" The disciples were silent. They really didn’t want it told. They had been arguing, thinking one of them was better than the rest. Jesus said to all of them, "Let me tell you who is the best. To serve all others, is the greatest place. To cause success for another should be your only race. He then took a small child and set him in the middle of their group. He took him into His arms and spoke these words of truth; "Whoever takes small children, and embraces them as I do, it’s the same as embracing me, and you will come into the reality of truth. Whoever embraces me is receiving even more; you also receive the Father into your very core."
Later, John spoke to Jesus, "Lord, we saw a man the other day; He was making demons leave, and he was using your name. We told him to stop it because he wasn’t in our group. We thought that if he wasn’t hanging with us, he wasn’t one with you."
Jesus answered, "Don’t stop him. He is not my enemy. He is doing something powerful when in my name he speaks. If someone gives you a drink, just because you are mine, he will get a reward just for making the time. Remember, if there is a young one who you choose to deceive, you’d be better off with an anchor around your neck and thrown into the sea. If you get involved with something that spells out wickedness, turn your steps around. A snake has a poisonous kiss. If you have a hand that brings sin your way, it is better to cut it off then to burn with it in place. Life is better without it, if it only brings you into hell. Would you rather have it and burn, or loose it and have all be made well? If you have a foot that always walks you into sin, better to be rid of it then to burn within. If it’s your eye that causes you trouble; taking your sight from God and causing your vision to be double, then you are better with just one eye, living as the bride of Christ, then to be in flames just because of your pride. In that place of flame, the burning will be hot. All of yourself will be gone, so it’s better not to have those dirty spots. Everyone will be cleansed, by the trials they must endure; your corrupt affections will all be made pure. Keep yourself untainted, or you will be of none effect. Keep yourself in peace and your trials will be blessed."
Chapter 10
Jesus then left Capernaum, and from the Jordan, He went east. He went into the land of Judea and began to teach. Crowds constantly gathered just to hear Him speak. They were always eager to see who else would be set free.
Pharisees came to test Jesus, to find weakness in His words. They tried to think of anything to cause His reputation to be hurt. They asked Him, "Tell us is it right, can a man just leave and divorce his wife?" Jesus answered, "What did Moses say to you? What was his direction? "Well, he said we could fill out a form and have a complete separation."
Jesus said, "That was only because of your hearts, they no longer had compassion. It was because of your stubbornness that he gave you that direction. Bu…from the beginning, when creation first did start, God made them male and female, two joined as one heart. A man shall separate from his father and leave his mother too. A divine union has taken place; God has made one out of the two. What God has put together, let no man divide; these are not to separate, but as one they do abide.’
When they went inside, the disciples asked of this again. They needed to hear more because they did not understand. Jesus said, "If a man divorces and finds another wife, he commits adultery against the woman’s life. If a woman leaves and marries another man, she too commits adultery, even if done with her husband’s consent."
Young children were brought to Jesus, just to get a touch from Him. The disciples scolded the parents and said, "Go away from Him!" Jesus became angry, "Leave the children be! Don’t ever prevent them from coming to me. The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are as these. It is the child-like in heart that cause the Father to be pleased. If you don’t accept the Kingdom with a heart that trusts as these children, you will never see the Kingdom of God, you will not enter in." Jesus accepted the children as though they were His own daughters and sons; He hugged and blessed every single one.
As Jesus set out on His Journey, a man ran up to Him. He fell down on his knees asking, "Good Master, how do I enter the Kingdom of Heaven?" Jesus answered, "Why are you calling me good, when only God has that value? You know what has been commanded; just follow that way through. Don’t commit adultery; do not lie; and do not steal. Respect your father and your mother; do not cheat and do not kill." The man said to Jesus; "Teacher, I have done this since I was very young. The commands that you have spoken, I have honored every one." Jesus looked at him, with eyes filled with love; He said, "There is still one thing that you have not yet done. Go take everything that you own, sell it all, then come follow me down this road. Take the money from the sale and give it to the poor. Your desire will then be for the Kingdom, and you will walk through the narrow door."
When Jesus spoke these words, the man became very sad; he owned so many things; he just couldn’t give up what he had. Jesus looked around and said, ‘"This is a great difficulty. Those who are rich will find a struggle walking in the Kingdom with me."
The disciples thought, "Oh no! This just cannot be. Who else could be in that place, other than those who have money?"
Jesus said, "Those who put their trust in things that have no meaning, find it difficult to trust in God who gives life to every being. If you took a needle and tried to thread it with a rope, that would be easier than a rich man in heaven, when in his riches, he has placed all of his hope."
The disciples were beside themselves, "Then who can enter in? If the rich can’t do it, then no one can!" Jesus said, "Yes, that is true, without God it cannot be done, but with God it can happen for each and every one."
Peter then started talking, he grabbed the opportunity; " We have left everything to follow you, what is in it for me and these?"
Jesus answered, "You can be fully assured that all you have left behind; fathers, mothers, brother and sisters, will be returned one hundred times. You who have left your homes, wives and children to follow me, this does not go unnoticed, but without persecution it shall not be. All things will return to you here, and in the world to come, you will have eternal life and understanding of all that has been done. There are many who seem first now that will actually be last. Many have misunderstood where their heart is in their task."
As they headed toward Jerusalem, the disciples were filled with dread. Jesus was headed into the town that would bring His death. Yet He walked so confident, He never missed a beat. The disciples were filled with fear, they were certain that this would be His defeat.
Jesus was talking and letting them know the things that were to come. How coming into Jerusalem would bring death to the Holy one. "The Son will be given into the hands of the Pharisees. He will be condemned and sentenced by the Scribes and Chief Priests. They will give Him over to the heathen; they will spit in His face. They’ll make fun of Him and whip Him; for Him they will have no grace. Then they will then finally kill Him, the one called, "The Son of Man." When I rise in three days, you will understand who I am."
James and John the sons of Zebedee then came to Jesus. They said, "Master, will you do a favor for us?" "What is it," Jesus asked, "that you desire of me?" "We want to sit at your right and left when you come into your glory." Jesus said, "You have no idea of the words that you speak. Can you drink the same cup that I will have to drink? Can you be baptized with what I am about to partake? Can you undertake the suffering of the price there is to pay?"
"Yes, we can." They answered, "We can do the same." Jesus said, "Yes you will drink the drink and be baptized with my name. As for the seats you ask for on my left and right, my Father has chosen to whom these belong; this was not given for me to decide."
The other disciples became angry, when they heard what James and John had asked. Jesus then spoke, "You guys are missing it; let’s get your focus on the right track."
"There are many governing authorities, who hold others in low esteem. They bring them into subjection of what they say is to be. Then there are those who rule over that authority, but between each of you, this is not to be. If you want to be the greatest, then become the least of all. The serving of others is to be your call. Whoever desires first place, must be the last in line. The one who becomes the servant will be the first to dine. The Son of Man did not come just so He could be served; He came to be a servant and to give up His own worth."
Jesus and His disciples came into Jerico, and then left there with a crowd. As they were leaving, a man was calling out. It was Bartimaeus, Timaues’ son, who was blind. When he heard that Jesus was coming, he wasn’t about to waste any time. He had been sitting near the road, begging as people went by. This was his daily routine, but now He began to cry; "Jesus, you who are David’s son, be merciful to me!" The people said, "Shut up, Bartimaeus; hold your peace!" Bartimaeus then yelled all the louder, over and over he did repeat, "Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me!"
When Jesus heard him calling, He stopped right there. He told the others, "Go and tell him to come here." They called out to the blind man, "Hey cheer up and come on, He heard your cry." Bartimaeus took off his coat and threw it aside. He jumped up and ran to Jesus, who asked, "What do you desire from me?" Bartimaeus said, "Lord, my desire is to see."
Jesus said, "You have it and it is because of your faith. You have what you desire, you can now go on your way." Bartimaeus then joined the rest of the crowd, as with Jesus they did go; he held Jesus in such high esteem that he followed Him everywhere down that road.
Chapter 11
Jesus and His disciples were now coming into Jerusalem near Bethany and Bethphage. It was at the MT of Olives that He had these words to say; "Go into the town." He spoke to two of them. "You will find a colt tied there when you enter in. No one has ever ridden this colt, untie it and bring it to me. If any man questions you, just say, ‘The Lord has this need.’ The colt shall then be released to you, just as I have spoke. When you answer with my words they will let the colt go."
The two disciples went and found the colt, just like Jesus said. He was tied near a door, where two streets met. They untied the colt, just as Jesus had told them to. There were others standing nearby who said, "Why are you letting this colt loose?" The disciples answered with the words that Jesus had said; the men then understood and gave the colt to them.
They brought the colt to Jesus and they put their cloaks on him, then Jesus hopped on and rode into Jerusalem. There were many others who took their garments and laid them in the street. Others laid out branches that they had cut from trees. They welcomed Jesus with honor, shouting out His praise. Many ran in front and many ran behind Him; they were all honoring His name. They cried, out ‘Hosanna!’ They honored Him as their King. "Blessed be the restoration of the kingdom that He brings!"
Jesus went into the temple, once He entered into Jerusalem; He looked at all that was taking place within. The day was getting late, and evening had arrived. He then went to Bethany with His disciples at His side.
When the next day came, they left Bethany. As they were walking, Jesus started to feel hungry. He noticed a fig tree that was in full leaf, when He got to it, there were no figs to eat. Jesus spoke, "No man shall ever eat from you again." The disciples stood by and took notice of what Jesus just said.
Jesus went into the temple and started throwing things out. "This is not my Father’s way, of this you can truly have no doubt." He over-turned the tables of those who were collecting money; they were buying and selling goods, and to Jesus, this was not funny. He flipped over the seats of those selling doves, and he wouldn’t let anyone else carry in any more stuff.
He then began to teach them; "My temple is a place of prayer, and you have turned into a den of thieves." The Scribes and Pharisees were standing there and they didn’t like what He had to teach. They decided they would destroy Him, but they had to find a way. They feared the way the people honored Him, because they thought He was a Saint.
In the evening, Jesus left Jerusalem. When morning came they passed by the fig tree again. The fig tree was all withered up, dried up from the root. Peter said, "Master look, the tree is no longer any good. Yesterday you cursed it. Today it has withered away. Jesus answered, "You can do anything, if you just have faith."
"I’m telling you, if you speak to a mountain, and you tell it to move into the sea, it will happen, you just have to believe. In all seriousness, I’m telling you, you can have anything that you ask. All you have to do is believe, and it is a completed task. Remember, when you are praying, don’t just bring forth a request. Be sure to forgive those who offend you, then your heart will be at rest. If you don’t forgive, then you won’t be forgiven. So just let it drop, and for you it is a given."
When Jesus and the disciples got to Jerusalem, the Chief Priests and the Scribes began to question Him. Who gave you the Authority, to do the things you do? And who had the authority to even give it to you?"
Jesus answered, " I also have a question, that I would like to ask you. If you can answer me, then I will answer you. John the Baptist, where did he come from; was he from God or man, can you answer this one?"
They thought before they answered the question that Jesus just asked. And with the knowledge that they had, they knew that they were trapped. "If we say from Heaven, He will ask whey we did not believe him. And if we say from man, the people will go into a tail spin." The people truly believed that John was a prophet, and if they said any different, there would be a riot.
"We cannot answer your question. We really cannot say." Jesus said, "Neither will I answer by whose authority I take my way."
Chapter 12
Jesus then spoke a parable, about a man who had a vineyard. How he got it all ready and put others in charge. He had to leave for a time, so He leased it out to them. He then sent a servant to collect, when the harvest had come in. When the renters saw the servant, they beat him up. There was no way they were giving any of the harvest up. The owner then sent another, and they greeted him with stones. They beat him in the head, and then shamefully sent him home. The owner then sent another man, and this one they killed. All who the owner sent to collect were treated with ill will.
The owner had only his son left, who he was certain they would treat with respect. But the farmers reasoned among themselves for the land, and the owner’s son ended up dead. They figured if they killed him then they would be the heirs. As far as the owner, they didn’t really give a care.
Jesus then asked those standing there, "What do you think the owner will do when He sees what has been done?" The people answered; "He will kill these farmers and give the vineyard to others to run."
"Did you not read about the stone that the builders did reject? They tossed it aside, but it became the head. This is the work of God alone, in marvelous ways He chooses His own."
The High Priests became angry, and they wanted to arrest Him. They knew this story Jesus told was directed right to them. Of course they were afraid of the crowd, so they just went about their way. They determined that the time would come, and they would get Jesus on another day. They sent some of Herod’s followers, along with some Pharisees. They wanted to trap Jesus by the words they could get Him to speak. They had a question for Him, and they laid it on real thick. They would do anything if only they could make Jesus slip.
"Teacher" They said, "You have great integrity. You are not swayed by man’s opinion, and you call out what you see. You teach God’s ways, only speaking what is true. Tell us, should we pay taxes to Caesar? What do you say we should do?"
Jesus answered them, "Why are you playing games with me? Bring me a coin and tell me whose name do you see? "They answered, "It is Caesars name." Jesus asked, "Then why the question? Give God what belongs to God, and give Caesar what belongs to him."
They were amazed at what Jesus did answer; there was nothing more they could say. But then it wasn’t long before the Sadducees came. These Sadducees don’t believe in the resurrection, so they figured it was their turn to trip Jesus in a question.
"Master, In Moses writing we do find, that if a brother dies childless and leaves his wife behind, then the living brother should take her to be his wife, and together they should bear children to preserve the brother’s line. Well, there were seven brothers, and because of their deaths, she had married each one. They all died childless, then her life was done. In the resurrection, who shall have her as his wife? Each of them had married her while they were in this life."
Jesus said, "You missed it! Don’t you know the scriptures? If you knew the power of God, you would see a different picture. In the resurrection, it isn’t about marrying, but they are like the angels in the heavenlies. As for the dead being raised to life again, didn’t you read the Book of Moses? Didn’t you understand? In the scripture that speaks of the burning bush, it was God who said, ‘I am the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob’, the God of the living, not the dead. You are very wrong in your choice of belief. Do not think that your own decision will cause what is to be."
There was a Scribe standing by who had been watching all that had been done. He saw that Jesus always answered well, so he brought forth a question, "Which commandment," He asked. "Is the very most important? Jesus answered, "It is the very first one that was sent; ‘Hear O’ Israel and understand, there is only one God of man. To love Him with all of your heart, mind, soul, and strength is the first and greatest command. To love your neighbor as yourself comes next in line. On these two all of the others ride; there is no greater command that you can find."
"You answered so well," said the Scribe. Truly there is no other God for any to find. He is the only one there ever was, and nothing can match surrendered love. To love God with all of your heart, your strength, and understanding, to love your neighbor as yourself goes beyond any other meaning. To offer sacrifices and burnt offerings do not even compare. True love for God and your neighbor goes further beyond any other care. When Jesus saw this man had answered in such wisdom, He replied, "You are not far from the Kingdom of Heaven." After this episode the questions were done. No one even dared to ask another one.
As Jesus taught in the temple, He presented a question, "How can the teachers say Christ is David’s son with the words that David had spoken? David was speaking by God’s Spirit when he said, ‘The Lord to my Lord did speak, "Sit here at my right hand, while I put your enemies under your feet.’" David actually calls Him Lord, so how can He be David’s son?" The crowds were so pleased with Jesus and his answers, they received His words with admiration and love.
As Jesus continued teaching, He said, "Beware of the teachers of the law; they love to be seen in long robes, but their ways will make you fall. They love to be noticed at the market place, and they crave after the best of the seats. They take the place of honor at banquets, but the widows, they shamefully cheat. They put them out of their homes and show off by saying long prayers. They take delight to be honored of men; know that great punishment will be theirs."
Jesus sat near the treasury and watched people throw their money in. The rich gave quite a bit, but then a poor widow came to give. She threw in two copper coins, which was equal to half a penny. Jesus called His disciples and said, "She gave more than any; they all gave from their excess, she gave from poverty. She gave all she had. She gave even when she was in need."
Chapter 13
As Jesus left the temple a disciple said, "Master, look and see! The stones and buildings are so beautiful; they have been done so perfectly." Jesus said, "Yes take a look. They all look so sound, but when the time is right, you shall see them all thrown down.
As Jesus sat on the MT of Olives, across from the so-called sacred place, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked, "When will all of this take place? Will there be a warning, or some type of a sign? How will we know, tell us, when will be the time?"
Jesus answered, "Be careful about what you listen to, and what you choose to believe. There are those who will come and they will profess to be me. Many will be captured and believe the words they have to say, and because they were not cautious, they will be led astray."
"When you hear about wars, and rumors of the same, don’t become anxious, just stay in my name. These things must take place; they are a necessity. Do not be concerned; it’s not the end that you see. Nations will fight against other Nations, and Kingdoms against each other. There will be agitation in every person, place and thing. You will see troubles, starvation and hunger."
"Take attention to yourselves, as this is just beginning the birth. You’ll be taken to be judged, and you will be rejected by their church. You’ll be brought before the leaders, and others in power. Realize, that this is my way. You are being brought before them because of what I have need to say. My word must be spoken, before the birthing can take place. My word that will be spoken will be bring resurrection into place."
"When they betray you and drive you to the court, don’t worry about your answers, because the Holy Ghost will come forth. Right at that moment, when it’s time for you to speak, your own speech will amaze you. The words that come forth out of your mouth will be the Holy Spirit flowing through."
"You will see brothers turning against each other, even causing death. Fathers will betray their own sons; they will be killed upon request. You will be despised and hated by all men because of me; if you will stay patient, your ability to endure will set you free."
"Children will attack their parents, speaking words to their disgrace. They will come against their lives and have them erased. You will be despised and hated by all men because of me, but if you will stay patient, the end of it will set you free."
"When you see the disgust and emptiness, that Daniel spoke of, gathering where it isn’t right, then those who are in Judea, to the mountain, should take flight. If you’re on the rooftop, don’t go into your house. Don’t come down just to take something out. If you're out in the field, don’t go back to get your stuff. Those who are pregnant and have young will find this time very grievous."
"Pray for desirable weather, so you can make your get-a-way. The suffering will be so great in these days. There have never been days such as these, not since the beginning of time. There will never be another day when you will find suffering of this kind. If God had not shortened these days, then no one would be alive. But because of a chosen race, He shortened the time."
"If some one comes to you and says, ‘Hey, Christ is here or there’, don’t believe these false prophets; for you, they have no care. They will do such awesome miracles; you will be certain it is Him. If it were possible, even the elect would be taken in. So be sure to take attention to all that you have just heard. When you see these things, you will remember my words."
"After these things, you will notice the sun will not be bright. The stars will fall, and the moon won’t give off light. The powers of the universe will no longer be. Then you will see the Son appear with a great army. They will be full of might and awesome glory. His angels will then be sent to gather all of those who have been chosen. They will come from every direction, and they won’t miss any one."
"Keep your eye on the fig tree. It shows the time of the season. When the leaves spring forth, you know summer is soon to come. It will be the same way that these things will come forth. When you notice the signs, you will see it right at the door. This period of time will not pass away until what I have spoken has all taken place. Heaven and earth can be gone in a day, but my word that is spoken will always take place."
"Now the timing of these things is not known to the angels or the Son; they are known by the Father, He is the only one. Be on the lookout, and keep your thoughts clear, otherwise you’ll have no idea of when this time comes near."
"It’s like a man who left his house and went away on a trip. Before he left, he put his servants in charge of it. He gave them authority and told each his task. He then told them to keep alert, because they did not know the time of his coming back. So to all of you, is spoken the same. You do not know when I will return again. It may be in the morning, or in the evening light. It may be when the rooster crows, or maybe even midnight. If He comes back with no warning, will He find you asleep? I’m telling you all to stay alert, because He will come back suddenly.
Chapter 14
Two days later, the Passover began. It was a Jewish holiday and a time of eating unleavened bread. Among those who attended, were the Chief Priests and the Scribes. They were seeking out a way in which they could cause Jesus to die. They reasoned that the Passover was not a good time to do it. If they tried to take Him now, they might cause a riot.
While Jesus was at Simon the leper’s house, which was in Bethany, a woman came in as they were sitting down to eat. She had an alabaster box, which held the most expensive of perfumes. She broke the seal and poured it on Jesus’ head, and a beautiful smell filled the room.
There were some, at the table, who considered this a disgrace. They could not figure out why in the world she would pour this perfume out in such waste? "This perfume could have been sold and much money would have been gained. It could have been given to the poor!" They snarled at this woman in disdain.
Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has done good to me. I won’t be here for very long, but you will always have the poor to do with as you please. She has done what was necessary, to prepare my body. She has anointed me so I will be ready to be buried. As long as time goes on, and everywhere this gospel is preached, this incident will be told in honor of her memory."
Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples, left the rest of them that day; he went to seek out the Chief Priests, so Jesus, he could arrange to betray. The Chief Priests were so excited, they promised Judas a reward. Judas then sought the right opportunity to hand Jesus over to this court.
On the day, when the lambs were sacrificed for the Passover Feast, the disciples asked Jesus, "Where shall go we prepare that we too may eat?" Jesus spoke to two of them, "Go into the city. As you are walking, there is a man that you will meet; he will be walking toward you, carrying water in a jar. Follow him and he will take you to a house where you will talk to the man in charge. Tell him, ‘The Master has sent us to see the room you have in your care." He will then take you to a large room, and you can prepare for the meal there."
The two then went out, as Jesus did command. As they came into the town, they came face to face with that man. Everything was ready, just as Jesus did speak. They were then taken to a room where they prepared for the Passover feast.
Jesus came later with the rest of the disciples, and as they were eating, Jesus spoke up and said, "One of you, here, will betray me."
They all became filled with sadness; they each asked, "Am I the one who will do this?" Jesus answered; "It’s one of you eating here with me, from the same dish. It’s true, the Son of Man will go, just as it was written, but there will be great distress for the one who has betrayed Him."
As they ate, Jesus took some bread and asked the Father’s blessing; He then passed it to each of them and said, "Take and eat this, it is my body." He took the cup in hand, which contained the wine; He said, "I won’t taste of this again until my Kingdom time." Jesus then gave thanks to God, and they all drank from the cup. He said, "This is my blood poured out; it is God’s new covenant."
They then headed for the MT of Olives, after singing a song of praise. Jesus said, "You are all with me now, but you are all going to run away. It was spoken by God, the prophets wrote it all down; ‘I will take down the shepherd, and the sheep will scatter all around.’ Once I’ve risen again, I will meet you in Galilee." Peter said, "Maybe everyone else will take off, but it isn’t going to be me!"
Jesus said, "Peter, I’m telling you, it will happen this very night; before the rooster crows, you will deny me thrice." Peter then spoke with much passion, "Lord, I will never deny you." The other disciples agreed that, for all of them, Peter was speaking the truth.
They then went to Gethsemane, a garden near Jerusalem. Jesus looked at His disciples, and He spoke to all of them. He said, "Sit here and wait, while I go pray." He then took Peter, James, and John, and they walked just a short way.
Jesus became very troubled; it was more than He could bear. "The sorrow that I feel is just like death; keep awake with me, stay right here."
Jesus walked a little further, and He fell to His knees. He prayed about that which was to come, that it would not be. "Father, please, nothing is impossible for you; take this cup away from me, it does not have to come true. But don’t listen to my agony, let your will be done. I will to finish my purpose; to fulfill the reason why I have come."
Jesus went back to the disciples. The three of them were sleeping. He said, "Couldn’t you just stay awake for one hour with me? Keep yourselves awake so you can handle adversity. The Spirit is always ready and willing, but the human nature is very weak."
Jesus went one more time and prayed the same words again. He then came back and found them sleeping. They didn’t know what to say to Him. They couldn’t keep their eyes open, as they longed for sleep. When Jesus returned the third time He said, "Are you still asleep? It’s time to wake up, the time is at hand, you will now witness the betrayal of the Son of Man. Come on, let’s go! My betrayer has arrived. I am now being given over to those who choose to live disguised."
Jesus was still speaking as Judas quickly came. He had a group of soldiers with him, and they were carrying swords and staves. The elders, Chief Priests, and Scribes, sent these guys. The betrayer had told them that he would reveal Jesus by a sign, "The one that I kiss, He is the one you are to take; arrest Him and watch Him carefully, so He won’t get away."
They arrived and Judas did just as He said. He betrayed the Master with a kiss, and handed Him over to His death. As they arrested Jesus, one of the disciples pulled out his sword. He then slashed at the High Priest’s servant, who didn’t have an ear anymore.
Jesus said to the men, "You’re coming after me as though I’m some dangerous man; I was always at the temple teaching, why didn’t you arrest me then? You see what has taken place? The scripture is being fulfilled; all that has been spoken shall be done just as my Father wills."
The disciples took off, but there was a young man who had been following. He had a linen cloth, which he used for clothing. The soldiers grabbed hold of him, but he took off real fast. The soldiers were left standing with his linen cloth in their hands.
Jesus was led to the High Priest, Chief Priest, and the Scribes. The elders were also gathered there. Peter was following from behind. Peter stepped into the gates of where the High Priest did reside. He sat there with the guards, warming himself, by the firelight.
The entire Jewish council, along with the Chief Priests, tried everything to find a witness against Jesus, but there were none who agreed. Many who were there spoke against Him, but their stories didn’t match. There were many lies; they just weren’t making any sense. Some stood up and claimed words they heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, then without hands, I will build it in three days. Even their witnesses didn’t agree, so the High Priest stood up and to Jesus, he did speak; "Aren’t you going to answer for yourself; listen to what they say against you?" Jesus made no reply; He just simply was not moved.
The High Priest spoke again, "Are you the anointed one? Are you the Christ? The one called God’s Son?" Jesus answered, "Yes, that I am, and you will see me sitting at God’s right hand. You will also see me return to earth; I will be coming with the clouds of heaven."
When the High Priest heard this, He got so mad, he tore his clothes. "We don’t need any more witnesses; He has just spoken what we needed to know. You heard the evil words He spoke. Now what is it that you decide?" They all condemned Jesus as guilty, and said that He deserved to die. Some started spitting at Him, and they even blindfolded His eyes. Then they hit Him with their fist and said, "Who hit you, Jesus? Let’s hear you prophesy." The guards also took hold of Him, and slapped Him in the face. They punched Him with heavy blows, and then led Him away.
Peter was down in the courtyard, while all this was taking place. A maid of the High Priest came in and she recognized his face. She looked at him intently and said, "You were with Jesus too! Don’t try to deny it because I recognize you." Peter said, "What are you talking about?" as Jesus he disowned. He then when out to the porch, and he heard a rooster crow.
The servant of the maid saw Peter and started speaking to all who stood by, "I know this man he’s one of them." But her words, Peter denied.
Later those who were standing there confronted Peter again, "Your accent betrays you, you’re a Galilean, and you are one of them!" Peter got so angry, he began to swear and curse, "I don’t know this man you speak of, and neither do I understand your words!" The rooster crowed another time, when suddenly Jesus’ words came back to Peter’s mind; "Before the rooster crows twice, you will have denied me three times." As Peter thought on these words, he broke down and cried. This man Jesus, whom he dearly loved, he truly did deny.
Chapter 15
In the morning, the whole Supreme Court got together to discuss their next step. They decided to send Jesus to Pilate, where He could be sentenced to death. Jesus was bound and taken to Pilate, who questioned Him, "So, you’re the King of the Jew’s?" "Yes." Jesus said to him.
Jesus was then accused of many things by those called the Chief Priests. Jesus just stayed quiet, not one word did He speak. Pilate asked Jesus, "Aren’t you going to answer? Listen to their words." Pilate was quite impressed at Jesus. It seemed as though He had not heard.
There was a custom held every year at the Passover Feast, and each year at this time, a prisoner was granted a release. There was a man named Barabbas, who was a prisoner. He had been involved in the revolt against Rome, in which he had committed murder. The people were yelling at Pilate, to recognize the custom this year. They wanted a prisoner released; right now, right here!
Pilate questioned, "Whom shall I release to you? Shall it be Jesus, the King of the Jews?" Pilate was aware of why they brought Jesus here. He knew they were envious of Him, and that His ways caused them fear.
Well, the Chief Priests, they already had a plan. They had influenced the crowd to choose Barabbas as the free man. Pilate questioned, "Then tell me what shall I do? What is to become of this one whom you call, ‘The King of the Jews?’"
They yelled out, "Crucify Him!" Pilate asked them, "Why? What evil has He done that has made you want Him to die?" The crowds grew very angry as louder they cried, "Get rid of this man! We want Him crucified!" Pilate then released Barabbas, so the crowd would be satisfied. He then had Jesus whipped, and gave Him over to be crucified.
The soldiers led Jesus away, into the courtyard. As soon as they arrived there, they called out all of the other guards. They dressed Jesus in a purple robe and put a crown of thorns on His head. They mocked Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Then they beat Him on the head. They spit at Jesus and bowed before Him; they left nothing out in their making fun of Him. When they finished their game, they took back the purple robe. Then they led Him to be crucified, after they had dressed Him back in His own clothes.
A man came by, who was the father of Alexander and Rufus; his name was Simon from Cyrene. The soldiers made him carry Jesus’ cross. They brought Him to Golgotha, which means, ‘The place of the skull’. They gave Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not taste of it at all. They crucified Him there. Then between themselves, they divided His clothes; they threw dice to see who would get to have them as their own.
It was around nine in the morning, when this crucifixion took place. Above Him was written the accusation, "The King of the Jewish Race." With Him were two robbers, who were also crucified. One was on His right, and the other on His left side. So this was the day it came to pass, exactly what the scriptures read, ‘He was counted among evil men’ just as the prophet said.
The people who passed by spoke awful things to Jesus, "So, you can tear down the temple and build it in three days.... why don’t you show that to us? What’s happening now Jesus, can’t you come to your own rescue? Come off of that cross and show us what you can do."
Of course the Scribes and Chief Priests also joined in amongst themselves, "He saved others, but He isn’t very good at saving Himself. The King of Israel huh? Let’s see this Messiah come down from that cross. He can get us to believe us then. We will even let him be our boss." The two who were crucified next to Him, also joined in with the rest of them.
At noon, the sky became very dark, and it lasted until three. At that time, Jesus cried out, "Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani!" Here is the translation of what these words did mean, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’
Some people, who were standing near, heard Him cry out. They thought He called for Elijah, when He let out that shout. One man jumped up and put some vinegar on a sponge. He gave it to Jesus to drink saying, "Let’s wait and see if Elijah comes."
Jesus then let out a loud cry and breathed His very last breath. He died, and His spirit left. The curtain in the temple suddenly split in two. It tore from top to bottom, no longer separating the two rooms.
When the soldier who was standing there saw what Jesus had done, the way He had given up His spirit, he said, "This truly was God’s Son."
Some women were watching, from a distance. One was Mary Magdalene; one was Mary the Mother of James and Joses, and the other was Salome. These women came with Jesus to Jerusalem. They came from Galilee. They were followers of Jesus, who always ministered to His needs. Evening was approaching, and the Sabbath was on its way. There were preparations that had to be made for that day.
Joseph of Arimathea, who was an honorable man, went to Pilate and asked if he would give Jesus’ body into his hands. Pilate wondered at this question, "Could Jesus already be dead?" He then sent for a soldier to go and check. Once Pilate was certain that Jesus was dead, he was satisfied and his answer to Joseph was, "yes".
Joseph gently took the body of Jesus down from the cross. He wrapped it in expensive linen, which he had just bought. He then took the body to a cave and laid Him inside. He rolled a stone in front of it, as the two Mary’s’ watched from close by.
Chapter 16
The women bought sweet spices, after the Sabbath had passed. When the time was right, the three of them came back; there was Mary the mother of James and Mary Magdalene, the other woman was Salome. It was the first day of the week, right after the rising of the sun, when the three of them came to anoint the Holy One.
They spoke among themselves wondering how they would roll the large stone out of the way. When they arrived at the tomb, it had already been moved out of place. As they walked into the tomb, where Jesus had been laid, they saw a young man, and they became afraid. He was just sitting there, on the right, in a long white garment. He spoke to them, "Don’t be afraid, I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth. Yes, Jesus was crucified, but He has now risen. Look, see for yourselves, this is the place where they had laid Him. Go and find the disciples, and Peter too. Tell them that Jesus will meet you in Galilee, just like He had told it to you."
The women left in a hurry, they were shaking and so amazed; none of them even spoke a word to the young man, they were all afraid.
On the first day of the week, after Jesus had risen, Mary Magdalene was the first one who seen Him. She was the one who had seven devils; Jesus had cast them all out and set her free from that peril. Mary went to the disciples, who were all sad and weeping. She spoke to them of all that she had seen. She told them Jesus was alive, but they did not believe. The words that she spoke to them were more than they could conceive.
Later Jesus appeared to two others, but His appearance was changed. They had been walking in the country, when Jesus came. These two also went and told it to the others, but they did not believe; they only questioned one another.
Jesus appeared to all eleven of them as they were having something to eat. He was a little stern because they had refused to believe. He spoke, "Go everywhere throughout the world, and speak to everyone. Tell them the good news of how I have come. Those who believe and enter in, they will be made whole and brought out from destruction. But those who choose to not come in, they will be condemned; it will be evident. Those who do believe will experience miracles. They will speak in other languages and set people free from devils. They will handle snakes and poison won’t bring their death. They will set their hands on others who will become healed and blessed."
After Jesus had spoken to them, He was lifted into heaven. He sat at God’s right hand and He was with every one of them. The disciples all went out and preached to everyone. The Lord worked right with them and confirmed the words that were spoken by each one.
