They had their laws and temple;

                                            Their synagogues and things:

                                    They had a Judaistic kingdom;

                                            They sought a Judaistic king.

                                    "Away with Him! Away with Him!

                                            "O'er us He shall not rule!

                                    "We have our beasts to sacrifice.

                                            "We will not have this fool!"

                                    They did not even guess

                                            This man was all their hope;

                                    They looked for outward things,

                                            Of inward things He spoke.

                                    They sought a king just like King David,

                                            Who conquered with the sword,

                                    Not One who loved His enemies

                                            And healed them with His word.

                                    Their scriptures and phylacteries,

                                            The borders of their hem,

                                    Were just a natural, outward thing:

                                            They sought no change within.

                                    And so, with blind abandon

                                            They crucified their King;

                                    And some today, if truth were known,

                                            Have done that very thing.

                                    They have their rules and temples;

                                            Their buildings and their schools.

                                    They have a systematic kingdom;

                                            They dote on systematic fools.

                                    "Away with Christ! Away with Christ!

                                            "O'er us He shall not reign!

                                    "We do not need to pay a price!

                                            "We've simply but to claim!"

                                    They do not even know

                                            On what their hopes are based.

                                    They cling to outward things:

                                            His Kingdom they've misplaced.

                                    They want a king just like King Saul

                                            Who stood above all men;

                                    Not One Who loses all

                                            To wash the feet of men.

                                    Their scriptures and their verses

                                            ‘Bide only on the tongue;

                                    While in the heart are curses;

                                            The oaths of Babylon.

                                    And so, with ears and eyes they've shut

                                            They, to their systems cling.

                                    They do not realize it, but...

                                            THEY CRUCIFY THEIR KING!

                                    Thus this sad tale of yesteryear

                                            Holds true for some today,

                                    For many wear the name of Christ

                                           Who care not for His "Way".
